Fall River Guard Station

Fall River Guard Station, a Deschutes National Forest rental cabin, is at the headwaters of the Fall River, a short distance from the Newberry National Volcanic Monument and just north of Wickiup Reservoir. Fall River feeds into the magnificent Deschutes River (shown above). The guard station has a maximum capacity of 5. The area around the guard station is especially popular for fly fishing, swimming, and hiking. Other attractions include the Lava Lands Visitor Center in Bend and the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway.

Cabin Features

Built in the 1930s, the single-story guard station features 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, and living room. Sleeping accommodations include a full bed, a twin bed, and a 2-person futon in the living room. A heater, refrigerator, stove, and lights all run off propane. In the kitchen find basic cookware and utensils. There is no water in the cabin. A vault toilet is located outside. Guests may park an RV on the premises and set up a tent.

What Guests Need to Bring

Visitors to the Fall River Guard Station should bring their own bedding, towels, cleaning supplies, preferred cooking utensils, flashlights and a first aid kit for emergencies. With no potable water available, visitors should bring plenty of water for drinking, cooking and washing. Guests must clean the cabin upon departure and take everything they brought, including garbage and food.

Notice: "For the 2024 season, there will be no kitchenware provided such as pots, pans and utensils. Please plan ahead and prepare to bring your own."

Cabin Access

Contact the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District at (541) 383-5300 prior to arriving at the cabin to check on any restrictions or conditions, such as fire or road closures, weather or storms that may affect the quality of your visit.

Entry to the cabin is by combination lock box. Please call the Forest Service office at 541-383-5300 if you are having difficulty with the combination provided. You can also stop by the office, located at 63095 Deschutes Market Rd. Bend.

  3. Keep the building and grounds clean to deter squirrel, mice, rats, bears and other wildlife from area.
