Lodgepole Guard Station
Lodgepole Guard Station is a Forest Service cabin in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, only 37 miles south of Crater Lake National Park (shown above). The rustic cabin is located deep in the forest east of Prospect, beside pretty Lodgepole Meadow and Lodgepole Creek. With 40 acres of cross-fenced pasture available to guests who rent the cabin, it makes a wonderful retreat for large groups and for those with horses. The guard station is also favored for smaller gatherings of friends or a family.
Lodgepole Guard Station Features
Single-story Lodgepole Guard Station features one bedroom and a large living room. The bedroom is furnished with a full-size bed, a small closet and one dresser. In the living room are a wood stove, a coffee table, a chair, and a log-style couch. The bathroom has a flush toilet and hot shower1, amenities rarely found in other Forest Service cabins. Propane heat keeps the cabin warm on chilly nights. In the kitchen are a propane refrigerator and stove, basic cooking utensils, and a dining nook with a table and chairs. There are no lights in the cabin.
1Check with rangers about the water supply as there have been some problems with it in the past.
Outside, a former bunkhouse serves to store firewood and a barn stable along with several horse paddocks and water troughs. Also outside are a picnic table, a campfire ring and space for guests who want to set up tents.
What Guests Need to Bring
Visitors to Lodgepole Guard Station need to provide their own bedding or sleeping bags, pillows, foam sleeping pads,, perhaps extra toilet paper, flashlights and battery-operated lanterns, first aid kit, washcloths and towels, silverware, wine opener, matches, dish soap and garbage bags. Although the maximum occupancy is 6, there are only beds for 4 - hence the option of foam sleeping pads and tents. Visitors may want to bring an axe for splitting wood.
