Commissary Cabin

Commissary Cabin, one of two Fish Lake Remount Depot Cabins, is available as a winter rental by itself or paired with its companion, the Hall House. The cabins are located near the Santiam Pass Winter Recreation Area in the Willamette National Forest, off Highway 120, west of Santiam Junction. From viewpoints near Santiam Pass, visitors have panoramic views of the Cascade Range (shown above).

The Remount Depot, built in 1924, consists of a cluster of historic, wood structures once used for firefighters and as horse corrals, Parts of it are still in use as a rest and resupply station by Forest Service horse packers heading into nearby wilderness areas. During the summer the Remount Depot is open to the public as a day-use area.

Cabin Access

The road from Highway 120 to the cabin is not plowed and has no overnight parking area. You must park your vehicle(s) at Lava Lake Sno-Park on Highway 20. An Oregon State Sno-Park Permit is required for parking November 1-April 30. From Lava Lake Sno-Park, cross the highway and follow the blue diamond trail markers. You may hike, cross-country ski, or snowshoe (approximately one mile) to the cabin.

Commissary Cabin Features

The Commissary Cabin consists of a bedroom and kitchen. The bedroom has a full-size bed with mattress. The kitchen or main room contains a sofa, propane cooking stove/oven and heater. Solar powered lights are available as well as basic cookware and kitchen utensils. There is no electricity or running water.

Outside: guests find an outhouse with a pit toilet, and picnic tables

What Guests Need to Bring

Visitors to the Commissary House need to bring a good supply of water for cooking, drinking and cleaning. Also, guests are advised to bring bedding or sleeping bags, battery-powered-lanterns or flashlights, matches, extra toilet paper, first aid supplies, trash bags, dish soap, towels, an ice chest, and perhaps a wine opener. Guests must clean the cabin upon departure and take everything they brought, including garbage and food.

  • Seven Sno-Parks are within the Santiam Pass Recreation Area, a 15-minute drive from the cabins. Included among these are Lava Lake Sno-Park and Ray Benson Sno-Park. These Sno-Parks offer access to both motorized and non-motorized trail opportunities.

Commissary Cabin Access

"Please call the McKenzie River Ranger district at 541-822-3381 for 72 hours prior to arrival to confirm lock combination and get updated information."

"Entry to cabin is by key. The key is located in a combination lock box mounted next to the door. The combination can be found in your confirmation letter under Access Info."

"Fish Lake Day Use Area located at approximately mile post 1.5 on Highway 126 (approximately 1.5 miles South of Highway 126/20 junction) is available for unloading supplies for transport to the cabins. This pull out is approximately 1/8 mile from the cabins. Please note that overnight parking or long-term parking is not permitted here and access to this parking area may vary depending on snow levels and plowing frequency."

"To access cabins from the Fish Lake Day Use parking area, walk past the gate and into the day use area and continue north past the restrooms and through the wooden gate. Proceed north through a second wooden gate, go past the interpretive kiosk on the left and continue to the cabins."

  • Hike on the Hackleman Old Growth Trail west of Lost Prairie Group Campground.
  • Take the House Rock Trail past House Rock and on to House Rock Falls.
  • Visit the Long Ranch Elk Viewing Area west of the Trout Creek Campground.
  • Hike on the 2.8-mile Trout Creek Trail and the Walton Ranch Interpretive Trail.
  • Hike on the Iron Mountain Trail with meadows, springs, alpine environments, and a tremendous variety of flora.
  • Discover the beauty of Cascadia State Park by following local hiking trails. Take the River Trail to the South Santiam River.
  • Hike the Soda Creek Falls Trail ascends to viewpoints of the magnificent falls.
  • Use caution when swimming in the river near Cascadia State Park. No lifeguards are on duty and currents can be strong. The swimming area is outside the park.
  • Visit the South Falls Historic District, including the South Falls Lodge.
  • Stop by the historic Santiam Wagon Road used by 19th century travelers.

Commissary Cabin Regulations

  1. No tent, trailer or RV camping is permitted at this cabin. Access is to the cabin is difficult with winter snow. You must walk, cross-country ski, or snowshoe approximately 1 mile from the Sno-Park to the cabin.
  2. Smoking is not allowed in the cabin.
  3. Guests are asked to store all kitchen utensils in the storage bins/wooden box to keep out of reach of rodents.
  4. The cabin must be thoroughly cleaned before departure. Please hang all kitchen utensils on the rake heads. Leave behind no food or other items you brought to the cabin.
