Alpine Campground

Alpine Campground sits at 5,400 feet on the slopes of Mt. Hood, the highest campground in the Mt. Hood National Forest. Nearby is Timberline Lodge and Ski Area. Visitors often find patches of snow on the mountain even in mid-summer. Campground visitors take advantage of the great mountain biking opportunities at Timberline. Others enjoy a scenic chair lift ride. Enjoyable hiking trails are nearby, including the famous Pacific Crest Trail.

Alpine Campground has 16 campsites for tents only. All campsites are first-come, first-served. The campground and nearby ski area can be crowded on summer weekends. There can be considerable traffic during the day on summer weekends on the road past the campground.

Opening and closing dates for some campgrounds are only estimates, usually dependent on weather conditions. Not all campsites can accommodate trailers or RVs of all lengths.

    Visit Wildwood Recreation Site in Welches. At the Wildwood Recreation Site discover the Cascade Streamwatch Trail with an underwater fish viewing chamber.
  • Head over to Lost Lake for hiking, boat rentals, and fishing for rainbow trout.
  • From Hood River drive south on Highway 35 for magnificent views of Mt. Hood, nearby peaks, and the wonderful Mt. Hood National Forest.
  • Stop by for a picnic at Tollbridge Park off Highway 35.
  • Hike to 100-foot Tamanawas Falls. Park at the Tamanawas Falls Trailhead.

Key Alpine Campground Regulations

  1. Fires are only permitted in designated fire receptacles and must be attended. Fires must be extinguished upon departure.
  2. Pets must be kept on leash and attended at all times.
  3. Quiet Hours extend from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
  4. Prevent the spread of invasive pests by obtaining firewood locally.
  5. Secure food and scented items from bears.
